Fire Training

The Training Division is overseen by Chief Training Officer Casey Cabaniss. Having spent 17 years in the fire service, Chief Cabaniss holds certifications as a Master Firefighter, High Angle Rope Technician, Fire Instructor, Hazardous Materials Technician, Hazardous Materials Incident Command, and Fire Officer 1. He has also been an instructor at the Fire Academy, along with in-house training experience with Fire Science, Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, and Rope Technician classes. Chief Cabaniss oversees the skills, education, and training of all members in the Tyler Fire Department. His devotion to assisting the members of the Tyler Fire Department to achieve excellence in fire service delivery will serve the citizens of Tyler well into the future.

The City of Tyler Fire Department is an all-hazards response agency and our goal is to be prepared for these responses through quality training and preparedness. Each firefighter logs over 240 hours per year of training in subjects ranging from fire suppression and driver training to technical rescue scenarios.  Training meets the standards to keep Tyler’s Class 2 ISO rating, providing the citizens with reduced property insurance rates.

The Training Facility is currently located at 701 Fair Park Drive in Tyler, and is home to a four-story tower, firefighter survival obstacle course, and live fire training cottage. Other training props on site include a roof operations and ventilation simulator, confined space and storage vessels, and propane fired vehicle fires, dumpster fires, and pressure vessel fires.  The Tyler Fire Department is a certified training facility through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.

For questions or information about the Training Division, please contact Chief Cabaniss at or (903) 535-0005, ext. 6.
